Programme: 

Criteria for acceptance onto this course: 

Participants must have some level of experience in the learning of the fundamentals of Motivational Interviewing, equivalent to a training an introductory training.  

Learning outcomes: 

Participants will acquire an advanced awareness of the technical and relational components of MI. They will learn and receive a greater opportunity to practice the skills and develop their skills in this respect. They will have the opportunity to receive structured feedback on their practice of MI. They will learn more about the specific research in this model.  

 

Teaching methods: 

The workshop emphasises and applies the theory and practice of Motivational Interviewing as an evidence based treatment approach.  

 

Throughout the workshop various methods will be used to facilitate learning, including lecture format (with PowerPoint presentation), demonstration of techniques, video presentation, diad and triad exercises and feedback. There will be a greater emphasis on practice than in more preliminary trainings.  

 

Content: 

Training will consider the following: 

Ø  Analysis of practice audio or videotapes 

Ø  More demonstration and practice exercises 

Ø  Less didactic material 

Ø  Focus is on differentiating change talk from commitment language, and learning how to elicit and shape the two 

Ø  Prior proficiency and experience in the practice of MI are assumed 

Ø  Ongoing consultation and supervision 

Ø  Research indicates feedback and individualized training are most effective for gaining MI skills 

Ø  This type of consultation can happen individually, within an organization, or contracted in addition to any workshop 

As with more preliminary training, the Spirit, Principles and skills will form the basis for further and deeper exploration. There will also be a greater investigation and exploration of key concepts such as Ambivalence, Change talk, resistance, sustain talk and commitment language. Advanced reflective listening will also form a key element to this training and will conceptually permeate all practice.   

 

 

Research/Literature: 

Various article and randomized control trials will be reviewed with particular attention being paid to Project Match 

 

Coaching and feedback: 

Participants will have the opportunity to practice in groups and receive peer feedback. They will also be required to submit tapes of MI practice as a specific exercise. They will receive structured feedback for this.
